Conservation strategies for saving Barbus occidentalis - a declining fish species from Oyu
نویسنده
چکیده
Barbus occidentalis is an important commercially exploited fish in Nigeria inland waters which is disappearing from her lakes and reservoirs and facing the threat of extinction. A two-year (January, 2002December, 2003) sampling of the fish from Oyun reservoir revealed a low and declining population of density of the species with 25 and 13 species caught in 2002 and 2003 respectively. Various interacting factors between the fish, reservoir and watershed such as reduced availability and competition for food, overexploitation, watershed abuses, eutrophication, low breeding, migration and habitat degradation were adduced for the declining population. Legislation, implementation of fishing laws and regulations, having protected areas and closed seasons, control of non-native species, artificial breeding of the species, capturerelease method, habitat restoration, education and conservation awareness were some of the conservation strategies that were suggested to save the species from further decline and possible extinction. These strategies if utilized effectively and applied appropriately will not only preserve the aesthical, economic, ecological and genetic values of the species, but will also improve the fisheries of reservoir and prevent the extinction of the fish.

متن کاملFish assemblage patterns as a tool to aid conservation in the Olifants River catchment (East), South Africa
South Africa has committed to address freshwater conservation at the catchment scale, using a combination of landscapelevel and species-level features as surrogates of freshwater biodiversity. To support this work, we examined fishes in the Olifants River catchment, where multiple anthropogenic pressures affect streams. Patterns in fish assemblage data across 88 sites were analysed and related ...
متن کاملAn overview of the status, trends and challenges of freshwater fish research and conservation in Malaysia
Freshwater fish biodiversity is a precious natural asset in terms of economic, cultural and scientific interest. And yet, the inland freshwater ecosystem in Malaysia is declining at a far greater rate than terrestrial ecosystems in the tropics. What happened, and what is being done to address the crisis? This paper extracts findings from the latest literature and explores overarching issues per...
متن کاملEvidence for Bombus occidentalis (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Populations in the Olympic Peninsula, the Palouse Prairie, and Forests of Northern Idaho
Since the mid-1990s, Bombus occidentalis (Green) has declined from being one of the most common to one of the rarest bumble bee species in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Although its conservation status is unresolved, a petition to list this species as endangered or threatened was recently submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. To shed light on the conservation situation ...
متن کاملIntrogression and dispersal among spotted owl (Strix occidentalis) subspecies
Population genetics plays an increasingly important role in the conservation and management of declining species, particularly for defining taxonomic units. Subspecies are recognized by several conservation organizations and countries and receive legal protection under the US Endangered Species Act (ESA). Two subspecies of spotted owls, northern (Strix occidentalis caurina) and Mexican (S. o. l...
